Fixing Our Damp Problem – Final Piece of the Puzzle

Our old stone farmhouse in Portugal has been plagued with damp, mould and moisture issues for years and the fabric of the building has suffered as a result. In today's episode we begin to tackle the fourth and final piece of the puzzle so we *hopefully* end up with a comfortable, warm, dry home. Today…

The Only GOOD Thing About Plumbing

I hate plumbing. It's awkward and fiddly but an important part of any renovation or remodelling project. Today we wrangle some waste pipe (for grey water harvesting and black water to our septic tank) into the corner of our lounge and up into the location of our new bathroom. Not everything goes to plan,…

Behind the Scenes – Limewashing the Lounge

In this video we apply some homemade limewash to the walls in the lounge. But this video isn't really about limewashing (as much as we do talk about it a lot). We recently purchased some new microphones to improve the sound quality of our videos and this video was made to test how they perform…

Another Room (Almost) FINISHED!

We've been working away on the lounge renovation over the last three months: plastering, plumbing, lime washing, tiling and more. Since we've shown a number of these things in previous videos we thought we'd put them all together into one long video to show how this room has transformed over the last few weeks.…

Why DON’T We Work on ONE Room at a Time?!

In this video we start work on the new bathroom plumbing, running hot and cold water feeds up from the plant room, through the lounge ceiling and up through the concrete floor into the bathroom above. With a few obstacles to work around and a mid-way undo, redo, we always thought this project was…

It’s Time for the Pink Toilet to GO!

Since December 2020 people have been obsessed with the pink toilet in our retro 1990s bathroom. After today's video, the famous toilet will be no more. It's kind of crazy to think that it's taken over three years for us to circle back to the bathroom renovation and finish what we started all that…

Yarn Projects (crochet/knitting)

Knitting Needles

I've only just started knitting again and have had to upgrade from my original Symfonie needles (they tend to snap quite easily). I have a set of stainless steel needles from ChiaoGoo and also an ebony set from Lantern Moon.

I like both! The stainless steel was a little hard to get used to but yarn really glides on them. I like the look and feel of the Lantern Moon set too, but unfortunately they don't come in all the sizes I tend to use so I now end up switching between the two sets.

Crochet Hooks

I've tried loads of different single hooks to find the 'perfect' hook. I finally found what I was looking for in the Clover soft touch range. The hook glides well and the thumb rest is really comfortable. Unfortunately they don't seem to be available in a set, so I have a jar full of all the sizes I like to use.

Tunisian Crochet Hooks

My favourites are these from Lantern Moon, they're super comfortable and glide really well, and the best bit is that they swivel. They are also compatible with the KnitPro Symfonie hooks (these seem less sturdy but also glide well).

I also have a set from ChiaoGoo made from bamboo. These are very lightweight but I find that they can snag on some yarns (a nail file often helps to make the hook head better).
