I’ve Wanted to Do THIS For YEARS!

Plastering is in full swing in the kitchen and Kylie has been busy next door in the lounge. In this week's episode Kylie tackles a project that's been on the list for (literally) years, installs a liner for a window and tries her hand at mixing hemp lime plaster.

FIDDLY But Worth It? Creating Wall Nooks

The next big project on our Portuguese farm house renovation is plastering the kitchen. This is the biggest room in the house and there's lots of details to get right first. Some of the preparations have been done already and some are still to do. In this video we'll give you a progress update…

Massive MILESTONE! (We Have a Flushing Toilet)

It’s been nearly three years but we FINALLY have a flushing toilet once again - a massive milestone in this big renovation project. The floor is down, sealed and grouted so we’re ready to assemble and plumb this glorious new throne for the downstairs bathroom. As you might expect, this goes very smoothly…

Can We MOVE IN For the Winter?

We've come so far but there's still a LONG way to go. In this video we'll take you on a tour of our work-in-progress renovation and show you what's left to do before we can move in and be (relatively) comfortable. We'll also answer some common renovation questions along the way.

Simple Idea BUT Surprisingly COMPLEX

It sounds so simple: make an opening to hang a new door. But simple doesn't mean easy - particularly when it comes to working with a stone building. We've been wracking our brains for a long time, trying to work out how to solve this problem of installing new doors (and windows) into our…

Tasting FOUR Homemade Wines and FIVE Beers

It's time for something a little bit different. Over the last couple of years we've tried our hand at making wine - and beer - from various fruits and vegetables that grow on our small farm in Portugal. We've made a selection of country wines from a wide variety of fruit including cherry wine,…

Yarn Projects (crochet/knitting)

Knitting Needles

I've only just started knitting again and have had to upgrade from my original Symfonie needles (they tend to snap quite easily). I have a set of stainless steel needles from ChiaoGoo and also an ebony set from Lantern Moon.

I like both! The stainless steel was a little hard to get used to but yarn really glides on them. I like the look and feel of the Lantern Moon set too, but unfortunately they don't come in all the sizes I tend to use so I now end up switching between the two sets.

Crochet Hooks

I've tried loads of different single hooks to find the 'perfect' hook. I finally found what I was looking for in the Clover soft touch range. The hook glides well and the thumb rest is really comfortable. Unfortunately they don't seem to be available in a set, so I have a jar full of all the sizes I like to use.

Tunisian Crochet Hooks

My favourites are these from Lantern Moon, they're super comfortable and glide really well, and the best bit is that they swivel. They are also compatible with the KnitPro Symfonie hooks (these seem less sturdy but also glide well).

I also have a set from ChiaoGoo made from bamboo. These are very lightweight but I find that they can snag on some yarns (a nail file often helps to make the hook head better).
