Why Did We Move to the Centre of Portugal?

We get lots of questions about where we live in Portugal. What location? What's the local area like? How many people are there? Where are all the cars? We live in the interior of Portugal - pretty much right in the center (and we'll take you to the actual geographic center in this video).…

Time for a BREAK (in Nazare, Portugal)

Join us in the first episode of our "TRAVEL" series for a short trip to Nazaré, Portugal. We've only booked a couple of nights away but that should be plenty of time to see what this charming seaside town on the coast of Portugal has to offer. We're hoping to find waves, wine, walks…

The FINAL Layer! – DIY Limecrete Floor (Part 4)

This limecrete floor project has been months in the making. From removing the old concrete to digging down over 40cm to filling everything back in with a combination of geotextile, LECA, natural hydraulic lime (NHL 5) and installing the underfloor heating pipework; we're finally ready for the last layer. The plan was to show…

The Underfloor Heating Saga Continues

The pipes are down and our replacement part has been fitted. But there's a new challenge with our Uponor underfloor heating system. And we've been scratching our heads and talking to suppliers and manufacturers over the last week. We think we have a solution but it goes again the steps laid out in the…

SO Smooooooth – Lime Plastering a Stone Wall

With the float coat on, it's time for another experiment: mixing and applying a top coat of lime plaster. Unlike the previous, float coat, this one won't have any hemp in it. But as this is the first time I've applied this kind of plaster, it's probably going to take a bit of getting used…

Yarn Projects (crochet/knitting)

Knitting Needles

I've only just started knitting again and have had to upgrade from my original Symfonie needles (they tend to snap quite easily). I have a set of stainless steel needles from ChiaoGoo and also an ebony set from Lantern Moon.

I like both! The stainless steel was a little hard to get used to but yarn really glides on them. I like the look and feel of the Lantern Moon set too, but unfortunately they don't come in all the sizes I tend to use so I now end up switching between the two sets.

Crochet Hooks

I've tried loads of different single hooks to find the 'perfect' hook. I finally found what I was looking for in the Clover soft touch range. The hook glides well and the thumb rest is really comfortable. Unfortunately they don't seem to be available in a set, so I have a jar full of all the sizes I like to use.

Tunisian Crochet Hooks

My favourites are these from Lantern Moon, they're super comfortable and glide really well, and the best bit is that they swivel. They are also compatible with the KnitPro Symfonie hooks (these seem less sturdy but also glide well).

I also have a set from ChiaoGoo made from bamboo. These are very lightweight but I find that they can snag on some yarns (a nail file often helps to make the hook head better).
