The upstairs work to replace the old floor continues… The next stage of the project is to remove an internal stud wall that originally separated the small upstairs kitchen from the room with lots of windows at the top of the stairs.
This wall is not supporting the roof above and is built in an old Portuguese construction called tabique. A series of wood uprights sit between a floor plate and a wall plate – much like a modern stud wall but much more sturdy and without any insulation. The wall was covered in wooden laths and lime plastered over.
